Northern Simpson Desert Treks

Our revised itinerary now includes two treks in the northern Simpson Desert:

16 day Never-Never Country Trek

13 day Hay River Trek

16 day Never-Never Country Trek

The extensive flooding in Queensland has caused a re-think in our plans for 2010. After consultations with Lindsay Bookie, traditional owner of the country around the Hay River, and Bush Heritage Australia, owners of Ethabuka Reserve, we have put together a trek that begins in Queensland and finishes on the Hay River in the Northern Territory. The trek route takes in the Never-Never Country, the name that Lindsay's family has given to the desert between the Hay & Field Rivers. The entire trek route has received heavy rain - Ethabuka up to 200mm and Tobermorey Station (whose southern boundary we cross) over 410mm in places. Both the Field and Hay Rivers have also flooded into the desert.
This promises to be a fascinating trip, our first trek in this area. The country will vary from the classic red uniform dunes on Ethabuka to the more undulating and open timbered country around the Hay.

This short trek will travel adjacent to the Hay River floodplain, exploring parts of the river and also venturing into the surrounding dunefields. We expect that the floodplain will be thriving with life and our 9 trekking days will enable us to see how the desert has responded to the rain and floods. The dunes in this part of the Simpson are smaller and not as 'red' as those at Old Andado in the western Simpson, so the country should be much easier to navigate. The short duration of this trek is tailored for those people who wish to see a rarely visited part of the Simpson and who may be looking for a 'winter getaway' from the colder climate in southern Australia.
