The Australian Desert
Foundation of indigenous culture for millennia, witness to the epic
journeys of the 19th Century explorers, and custodian of the iconic image of the
Australian bushman. The spiritual core of our great country - a vast expanse of wilderness
symbolising a still
and peaceful balance to the frenzy of 21st Century life.
In 2010 there is no better time to walk through this timeless
landscape. This winter we are visiting the spectacular Simpson Desert in the northern
Territory and Queensland and you are invited to personally experience what thousands of
previous desert trekkers have already discovered - that Australian deserts contain a
wealth of ecological diversity and are a place of wide-ranging discoveries.
Trekking with the camels provides a connection to the country that is
completely absent when travelling by vehicle.
Walking enables an intimate, personal journey that will rejuvenate
and reconnect you to the land and to yourself.
No tracks. No roads. Just desert. |
9 Day Western Simpson
Desert Trek
|
This trek will explore the country to the
north, east and south of Old Andado Station perhaps extending towards the Finke River.
Within a trek you may encounter a variety of country - from small gibber plains to
coolibah-lined creeks to impressive 25 metre high red-crested sand dunes. Some of the
inter-dune corridors are over 500 metres wide whilst others disappear into a maze of
confused dunes, covered in tangled spinifex. These treks are very popular with bushwalkers
and photographers and are an ideal introduction to camel trekking and the Simpson Desert.

Our base in the Western Simpson is at Old Andado
Station. This heritage listed homestead, built in 1922, and nestled amongst the magnificent
red dunes is home to Molly Clark who has restored the buildings to faithfully reflect the
life of the early pioneers of the district. Our camel camp will be in the adjoining dune
corridor, and you will have an opportunity to inspect the homestead before the trek
departs.
A wonderful way to really experience the many aspects of the Simpson -
atmosphere, sounds, tracks, silence, land systems, colours & clouds. Only possible due
to the superb organisation, forethought and generous sharing of experience by Andrew and
team.
